Cumbernauld’s reputation as a concrete jungle could not be further from the truth. The town was designed deliberately to be the complete opposite. People were leaving behind the slums of Glasgow to come into a town where greenery and space were to be the main buzz words. Parks such as Cumbernauld House Park and Palacerigg country park are some of the largest in the North Lanarkshire area and are beautiful. Within walking distance of the town are fabulous green spaces such as the Broadwood nature reserve, Fannyside loch and St Maurices pond – all of which have picnic facilities and are stunning patches of green and water built directly into the town.
The streets of Cumbernauld were also built with that connection to nature in mind and most of the New town developments have large gardens and natural public areas.
Now taking a look at these images can we really say it’s a concrete jungle?
